Display Panels Promoting Annual Walk and Wheel Events

A series of display panels are available for local promotion of annual walk and wheel events which are often celebrated in schools and communities across Canada. The walk and wheel events are International Walk to School Month, Winter Walk Day, Spring into Spring and Bike Week/Month.

The display panel message encourages participation in the walk and wheel event and provides a link to event information from Green Communities Canada. The event panel can be paired with two other panels—one panel showing children and youth walking or wheeling in a particular season, and the other panel promotes the local Simcoe On the Move initiative with a general message “Be active as part of your everyday routine.”

The panels attach to a display frame as set-up in the photo below. An optional shelf for brochures/resources is included.

Along with the On the Move logo, the kit includes symbols, letters, and numbers that can be combined creatively to make the school journey more active and fun, for example, forming a flower with motivational messages or laying out a hopscotch path. Stencils can also be used on paved areas at the school to map out courses or stations for teaching cycling skills.

Stencils may be applied temporarily with chalk or more permanently with paint. The kit includes instructions and 16 stencils ranging from 6 × 6 inches to 48 × 26.5 inches. Chalk and paint are not included. Traffic paint in spray cans is commonly used for durability. Depending on where the stencils will be applied, consultation with the municipality or school board facilities staff is recommended. When possible, choose non toxic and biodegradable products.

On the Move wayfinding signs have been installed in some local school zones by municipal staff. The signs were designed by partners of the Simcoe Muskoka On the Move initiative using Ontario Active School Travel funding.

The signs encourage active school travel by identifying the estimated time it would take to walk or wheel to school from that specific location.

The following is an example of a sign posted in a local school neighbourhood.

On The Move Collingwood sign

Installing more signs in our local school zones is a great way to increase the promotion of active school travel in our region.

While funding is no longer available, print-ready PDF versions of the signs are available for download and linked below. Each of the three versions of the signs display different distances (e.g., a 5 minute walk to school and a 3 minute wheel to school; a 10 minute walk and a 5 minute wheel to school; or a 15 minute walk and an 8 minute wheel to school). Local municipalities are invited to download and the have signs made by their own printer.

Additional options for the signs include adding the name of the municipality, or a logo and QR code. See samples below.  Adding a QR code is useful for providing additional information (e.g., a link to the municipality’s website, or this simcoemuskokaonthemove.ca website).
