Brush up on the facts to keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - April marks Oral Health Month and this year’s theme is Oral Health for Total Health, which highlights the essential role oral health plays in everyone’s overall health, self-esteem and well-being.

“Poor oral health can affect overall health, which is why it is important to know the facts about oral health and to get regular check-ups,” says Simone Guenette, manager of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s Oral Health program. “Oral health is about more than just preventing cavities.”

Regular dental appointments can help to detect cavities and other dental conditions like gum disease early, before they can lead to pain and infection or cause problems with eating, speaking, and attending work or school. Gum disease can cause more than pain as it is linked to medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. When problems are caught early, treatment by a dental care provider can reduce the risk of tooth loss.

In addition to getting dental check-ups, there are steps that everyone can take to help avoid dental issues. Establishing good habits like brushing and flossing each day and eating a well-balanced diet that limits sugary snacks and drinks will help towards improved oral and overall health.

While access to dental care is not always easy, the health unit provides dental screenings at no cost to all children up to 17 years of age through the Healthy Smiles Ontario program. Community screening clinics are offered by appointment at health unit branch offices in Barrie, Collingwood, Cookstown, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Midland and Orillia.
