Healthy Eating And Physical Activity

Breastfeeding parents do not need to follow a special diet. Eat when you are hungry and drink when you are thirsty. You may need more calories when breastfeeding. Use Canada’s Food Guide to track your food choices.

Caffeine can pass through breastmilk to your child. Limit caffeine to no more that 300mg per day. Caffeine can be found in many foods, drugs and beverages. Too much caffeine can cause changes in your child’s behavior.

Physical activity is healthy after giving birth. Go slow and listen to your body so you don’t overdo it. Physical activity doesn't affect the amount or quality of breast milk you make and won't affect the growth of your baby.
