Food Safety

Special events

Food safety matters at community special events. Organizers and vendors of special events such as fairs, pig roasts and charity events where food is served (either sold or given away) to the general public require a special event permit from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU). For more information, review our Special Event Guidelines

Event organizer application forms are to be completed by the event coordinator and must be received by SMDHU at least 30 days prior to the event. The coordinator form will capture details on site set up, provide a complete list of food vendors, and details (if applicable) for alcohol service, washroom and handwashing facilities, food handler training requirements, tattoo/piercing, and petting zoos.

Any food vendor providing food to the general public must complete and submit a vendor application form to SMDHU at least ten days prior to the event.

COVID-19 public health guidance for organized public events and gatherings provides direction for organizers of indoor or outdoor organized public events or gatherings to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The easing of public health measures does not mean that the COVID-19 pandemic is over or that the risk of infection has been eliminated. Organizers of public events and gatherings are encouraged to review their procedures and take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection for attendees and staff.
