Grade 7 School Clinics

School-Based Immunizations for Grade 7 Students

School Immunization nurses will be visiting elementary schools between October and December to provide the 1st dose of 3 free vaccines for grade 7 students. The nurses will return between April and June to provide the 2nd dose of 2 of the vaccines.

Students currently in grade 7 are encouraged to try to receive their vaccines at school prior to booking an appointment at the health unit. Accommodations are available for students who are anxious/uncomfortable receiving vaccines at school with their classmates. Parents can call into the health unit at 705-721-7520 ext. 8827 to discuss the options.

Students may also request to receive grade 7 vaccines from their healthcare provider.  The healthcare provider would need to special order these vaccines per student, therefore it is up to their discretion if they are willing/able to provide them. 

If your child is not attending school in person, these vaccines can be received by appointment at one of the health unit clinics.

 
What if My Child Misses the Clinic?

For grade 7 students who are absent from school the day of clinic, dose 1 will be offered at the school’s second round clinic when we return April to June.

For grade 8 students that started the vaccine series at school but missed a dose, the second dose will be offered at the school’s second round clinic when we return in April to June.

Alternatively, if your student missed their school clinic, they could attend one of the Grade 7 Catch Up clinics at your closest SMDHU office. Please call the Health Unit at 705-721-7520 ext. 8827 to speak with a nurse or click here to book your appointment.

Making a child’s vaccination experience better and decreasing the amount of pain they may feel is very important. If a child has a bad experience getting a vaccine, they may not trust their health care provider and may not want to get other vaccines or health care when needed in the future.

There are many things that can decrease pain and lessen stress and anxiety for children and their parents. Using a numbing cream, giving children a chance to ask questions, informing them about what to expect and letting them choose ways they can be most comfortable when getting a vaccine can help make children’s vaccination experience uneventful and even positive.

  • Are vaccines safe? Vaccine safety is taken very seriously in Canada. All vaccines are tested to make sure they are safe and effective. The most common side effects following vaccination are mild pain, swelling and redness where the injection was given.

If you do not wish to finish the series, they should receive the HB vaccine to make sure they have the best protection against HB.
  • Can I attend the clinic to be with my child? Yes. If you feel that your child will benefit from having you at the school with them to receive their vaccines, please call and speak with one of our nurses to make arrangements at 705-721-7520 ext. 8827.
  • Can we go to our family doctor to get these vaccines? We want all students to make an attempt to get their vaccines done at their school clinic, but if they are unsuccessful your healthcare provider can special order the vaccines from the Health Unit and have them completed at their office.
  • Do I need to report vaccines to the Health Unit? Yes! Parents/guardians are responsible for reporting any immunizations received with their health care provider to SMDHU.
  • Can we go to the Health Unit to get these vaccines? If your student was not successful at getting their vaccines done at school and you do not have a healthcare provider, or a health care provider who does not provide vaccines, your student can come to one of our SMDHU clinics to receive their vaccines.
