Ontario now follows an annual COVID-19 vaccination program, similar to the flu shot. Each year, an updated vaccine is available to better protect against new strains.
The vaccine is free for everyone 6 months and older, even if you don’t have an Ontario health card.
Who Should Get the Vaccine Early?
Some people are at higher risk and should get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it’s available in the fall:
- Adults 65 years and older
- All residents of long-term care or other group living settings
- People 6 months and older with weakened immune systems
- First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals:
- Anyone 55+ and their non-indigenous household members who are 55+
- All Community members under 55
- Pregnant individuals
- People in underserved communities
- Health care workers and other caregivers
Other groups who may get it early (to combine with the flu shot):
- Children 6 months to 4 years old
- People who work closely with animals (farmers, slaughterhouse and processing plant workers, wildlife researchers, vets, etc.)
Everyone else (6 months and older) can get vaccinated starting October 27, 2025.
If you’ve had the vaccine before, wait at least 3 months after your last dose.
Starting Your First Series of COVID-19 Vaccines?
The number of doses you need depends on your age and health:
- Children 6 months to 4 years (not immunocompromised): 2 doses of Moderna (8 weeks apart)
- People 5 years and older (not immunocompromised): 1 dose
- Anyone immunocompromised (6 months and older)
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what best for series is best you or your family members.
