Food and Nutrition

Is a low carb diet healthy for me?

Carbohydrates are required by your brain and other body tissues. Carbohydrates are found in all four food groups. Lowering your intake of carbohydrates can lower your intake of necessary nutrients and fibre. A diet rich in all the food groups may help reduce the risk of several chronic diseases. Click here for more information about low carb diets.

Canada’s Food Guide provides examples of the amount of food that makes up one Food Guide serving. Understanding portion sizes is the key to understanding the amount of carbohydrates that the body requires. The amount of food that a person eats in a meal or snack may be more or less than one Food Guide Serving. Portions of food are often large, especially those served to people dining out.

Use the eaTracker tool to assess your food choices and receive personalized feedback on your total intake of energy and nutrients, including foods from each of the four food groups.
