Food and Nutrition

Whole wheat vs whole grain

Whole grains and whole grain foods are composed of all three edible layers of the grain seed or kernel. Each layer provides different nutrients. Whole wheat is one example of a grain. In Canada, the definition for whole wheat flour in the Food and Drug Regulations allow a small portion of the wheat kernel to be removed in order to improve shelf-life. This means that some whole wheat products on the market may have slightly less whole grains than others.

People can find out if a product is made with whole grain by reading the ingredient list on the food label. Whole grain foods have the words ‘whole’ or ‘whole grain’. In the case of wheat, look for the words ‘whole grain whole wheat flour’.
