I'm pregnant. Are healthy eating recommendations different?

Yes. Women who could become pregnant as well as those who are pregnant or breastfeeding need a daily multivitamin containing folic acid. They should start taking a supplement at least 3 months before becoming pregnant. Women may become pregnant when it is not planned; therefore it is recommended that all women of child bearing age consider taking a folic acid supplement as a part of their diet. Women also need extra iron during pregnancy so the multivitamin should contain iron as well.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women may also need more calories. In general pregnant women are advised to eat a little more food, equal to 2-3 additional Food Guide Servings from the food groups of their choice. Pregnant women are advised to talk to their health care provider about their recommended weight gain range.
