Food and Nutrition

What are the best beverages?

Canada’s Food Guide suggests that people drink water regularly. It can satisfy thirst and promote hydration without adding calories to the diet. Other recommendations include:

  • Drink more water in hot weather and when you are very active.
  • Limit beverages that are high in calories and low in nutrients. These include alcoholic beverages, fruit flavoured drinks, soft drinks, sports and energy drinks, and sweetened hot or cold beverages (PDF).
  • Drink low fat milk and water with meals
