Smoking and Vaping

Vaping and E-cigarettes

Vaping devices (also called e-cigarettes, vapes, or pens) are widely used by youth in Simcoe Muskoka. These devices heat a liquid into a mist that’s inhaled into the lungs. While often marketed as “safer than smoking,” vaping still carries serious health and social risks, especially for teens and non-smokers.

At the same time, vaping devices can be used as a tool for adult smokers trying to quit or reduce cigarette use. They are not risk-free; however, they may be a less harmful alternative for those who have not succeeded with other quitting methods.

The Bigger Picture: Vaping’s Impact on Health and Community

Vaping affects your whole body, not just your lungs. It can have short- and long-term effects on:

  • Mental well-being – Vaping may increase anxiety, stress, and depression, especially in teens.
  • Learning and memory – Nicotine can affect how the brain develops, making it harder to concentrate and focus in school.
  • Future health – Vaping is linked to breathing problems, heart issues, and a greater chance of smoking later in life.

These health impacts extend beyond individuals. They influence families, schools, and broader community wellbeing.

What’s Happening in Simcoe Muskoka

Vaping is now more common than smoking among youth in our region. According to local school health surveys:

  • 1 in 5 students in grades 10–12 report vaping in the past year
  • Girls in these grades are slightly more likely to vape than boys
  • Many youth try vaping before knowing the risks
This trend raises concerns for families, schools, and public health in communities across Simcoe Muskoka.

Why It Matters

Vaping is often seen as harmless or “just a habit,” but it can quickly become a strong addiction. It can interfere with school, sports, relationships, and mental health. And for many teens, vaping is a first step toward using other tobacco or nicotine products.
