Road safety

Being a safe and responsible driver takes a combination of knowledge, skill and attitude.

Many factors have to be taken into consideration when talking about safety on our road ways.  Motor vehicle collisions are the cause of a significant number of deaths in Ontario.  In 2020 there were 535 people killed on Ontario roads.

The "Big 4" contributing factors:

  • Speeding
  • Impairment
  • Distraction
  • Not wearing a seat belt

Not only do we have to be concerned with drivers of motor vehicles, we also have to consider the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

The health unit works in partnership with local community organizations in an effort to prevent road injuries in our communities.

We:

  • Work with police and other emergency services to raise road safety awareness and provide education.
  • Provide access to research and resources for community stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policy change that will reduce collisions, injuries, and deaths.

What Matters to Your Health

Sharing the road is something we must do, and we need to do it respectfully, to prevent injuries from occurring.

Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians each have responsibilities to ensure everyone is safe.
