Ontario Wastewater Surveillance Initiative

Wastewater samples from wastewater treatment plants in the City of Barrie and the Town of Midland are collected by the municipal wastewater treatment plants and couriered to Ontario Tech University for analysis for viral RNA from SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19 infection.

This initiative is being undertaken with funding and support from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks  Ontario Wastewater Surveillance Initiative.

Data Notes:

  • Wastewater samples are collected from within wastewater treatment plants using 24-hour composite samples (meaning a sample is collected one an hour for 24-hours). These samples are transported to Ontario Tech University for analysis. Two regions of the SARS-CoV-2 are assayed (N1 and N2).
  • SMDHU reports a raw viral signal of the SARS-CoV-2 N1 gene, as gene copies per L from the wastewater samples. The raw signal is not normalized to account for changes in other inputs to the wastewater inputs that may affect the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in the samples. As a result the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 may be affected by other pressures on the wastewater system.
