Safe Water

Safe drinking water is essential to the public's health. Child care centre operators are responsible for providing safe water to children and staff.

Under the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act, child care centres are a designated facility. This means that drinking water within child care centres is regulated; there are specific sampling, testing, treatment and reporting requirements that apply. For questions, please contact the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

If a child care centre becomes aware of an adverse water quality incident, they must contact: The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks at 416-325-3000 or 1-800-268-6060.

Child care centres are expected to have a policy regarding contingency plans in the event of unsafe water or lack of water. Please see the policy development page of our website for further details regarding policy requirements.
