Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is healthy and natural – there’s nothing else like it. Breastmilk is all the food and drink a baby needs for the first six months of their life. Around 6 months, babies begin to eat solid foods and continue to breastfeed for up to 2 years and beyond. Continuing breastfeeding for up to two years and longer is healthy for children and is encouraged. The health unit works with, families, health care providers and community organizations to support breastfeeding.

We:

  • Provide prenatal education on breastfeeding.
  • Provide information, infant feeding assessment and care over the phone, in person and in group settings.
  • Promote breastfeeding-friendly places.
  • Collect, assess and report on the infant feeding rates in our communities.
  • Implement the 10 steps of the Baby-Friendly Initiative

What Matters to Your Health

How you’re going to feed your baby is an important decision. Breastfeeding is important for babies, children, parents, families, the community, as well as the environment. Knowing where to find help and support is essential.
