Immunization

Inactivated Poliomyelitis (IPV)

The Inactivated Poliomyelitis vaccine (Imovax® Polio/IPV) protects against polio disease.

• Polio vaccine is included in other combination vaccines when given as a primary immunization series.
• A single booster dose of polio vaccine may be recommended for adults who are travelling to areas with a high risk of polio, or who are at high risk due to their occupation.
• 95-100% of those fully vaccinated are protected against polio.
• At this time there are no other ways to prevent this disease. Hand washing and covering the mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing can help reduce the spread of disease.
• The risk of a serious reaction or side effect from this vaccine is much less than the risk of polio. If you experience any side effect worse than what is listed below, please seek medical advice and notify the health unit.

Common

• Pain where needle was given
• Redness
• Swelling

Rare

• Anaphylaxis

  • Anyone with an allergy to any of the vaccine components or who has had an allergic or anaphylactic reaction to this vaccine.
