Drugs And Breastfeeding

Talk to your health professional about medications and drugs you are taking, or are about to take, while breastfeeding. Most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding.

A health professional can help you to make an informed choice about your safest medication choices. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal products or supplements.

Using recreational or street drugs, including cannabis (marijuana), while breastfeeding may be harmful to you and your child. It is well known that your child’s brain develops very quickly in the early years. Exposure to cannabis could cause changes in your child’s brain. It is best not to use any form of cannabis while breastfeeding.
