Dental

Poor oral health is a public health issue. Access to oral health care is not as easy as it may seem.  Dental care can be costly – it’s not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan and many do not have dental insurance coverage.

At every age, oral health is an important part of maintaining general health. Prevention is key, as tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease are preventable.

The health unit supports oral health in our communities through prevention, promotion and treatment.

We:

  • Offer school and health unit-based dental screening for children and youth from birth to 17 years-old. Screening can identify those at high risk for dental disease and offer enrollment in the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program.
  • Provide dental treatment and preventive services for eligible children and youth through the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program.
  • Provide dental treatment services for eligible adults on publicly funded programs.
  • Services are provided in Barrie, Gravenhurst and an additional nine sites in our mobile dental coach.
  • Promote good oral health by supporting families and through various outreach and educational activities.
  • Support community water fluoridation as a safe and effective public health measure that benefits all members of the community.

What Matters to Your Health

It’s important to start good oral health habits early. Children should see a dentist or dental hygienist within six months of getting their first tooth, or by their first birthday. You can model good oral hygiene habits for your children by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day.

Dental screening and treatment for eligible clients can be accessed through the health unit. Call 1-877-721-7520 x 8804 to see if you or your family are eligible.
