Dental Screening

Good dental health is an important part of your child’s general health. Dental screening helps families to know if their child has a dental problem and helps them to access care. Screening is available to all children and teens age 17 or younger.

A dental screening is a visual look at teeth and gums and is done by a Registered Dental Hygienist. It does not replace a dental examination by a dentist.

We can help you find out if your child is eligible for free dental care through Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO)

For more information about dental screening or to make an appointment please call:

705-721-7520 extension 8804 or toll free 1- 877-721-7520 extension 8804.

  • Dental screening is done in all publically funded elementary schools.
  • Children in JK, SK, Grade 2 and 7 are seen every year in all schools. We also see children in additional grades in some schools.
  • Your child will bring a letter home from school to let you know when dental screening will take place.
  • Dental screening only takes 30-60 seconds. A “no touch” method is used with a sterilized mirror and a light.
  • Your child will get a dental screening report. If they have an urgent dental need or would benefit from preventive care they will also bring home some forms.

If there is an urgent dental need the Registered Dental Hygienist will contact you by telephone to discuss the findings.

Parents can also request a dental screening for any child or teen age 17 & younger throughout the year at a health unit office or by request at some community locations.  An appointment is required. Please call 705-721-7520 extension 8804 or toll free 1- 877-721-7520 extension 8804.
