Farmers' Markets

Farmers' markets offer a great selection of local food products and are routinely inspected by public health inspectors. We conduct inspections at the farmers' markets under Ontario Regulation 493/17.

Farmers' markets that are exempt from the regulation are those that have 51% of vendors who produce their own farm product and who are primarily selling or offering their own products. However, food must still be handled and prepared in a safe manner. All eggs, milk, fish and meat must be from an inspected and approved source.

Non-exempt markets have less than 51% of vendors producing and offering for sale their own farm product. These vendors are not eligible for any exemptions and must be compliant with Ontario Regulation 493/17.

For vendor and event coordinator roles and applications, visit our Special Events section.

For more information, please call us to speak at 705-721-7520 or toll-free at 1-877-721-7520 to speak with a public health inspector.
