Screening, Assessment & Referral
Screening & Assessment
The first step in fall prevention is a multifactorial risk assessment. The American and British Geriatrics Societies recommend that primary health care providers ask all older adults at least once per year about falls, frequency of falls, and any difficulties with gait or balance.
A comprehensive fall risk assessment is recommended for any older adult who:
- has had two or more falls in the past 12 months,
- has had a fall resulting in injury, or
- reports difficulty with gait or balance.
Fall risk should be evaluated based on individual function and health status, not chronological age.
