INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL

The Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee’s(PIDAC) Best practice documents are intended for use by health care workers and facilities/organizations providing health care including hospitals, long-term care facilities and community-based health care organizations. Recommendations in best practice documents are developed through reviews of literature and consultations with experts in infectious disease, surveillance, communicable disease and immunization.

Since 2015, local public health units have been mandated to respond to infection prevention and control complaints in regulated health settings.  To help support knowledge transfer and identify higher risk procedures (often associated with lapses), Public Health Ontario has created numerous guidelines, checklists and tools.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

  • Antimicrobial stewardship promotes the judicious use of antimicrobials to limit the development of antimicrobial resistant organisms. Antimicrobial stewardship programs support coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials including selection, dosing, duration of therapy and route of administration.
