Leprosy

Centre for Disease Control - Leprosy

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s Disease, is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. In Ontario, a very small number of imported cases occur per year. Although it is not fully understood how leprosy spreads, it is thought to be through frequent close contact with untreated infected persons. Leprosy affects skin, nerves and mucous membranes and is treated with antibiotics. Untreated cases may result in severe nerve damage, including paralysis of the hands and feet. (PHO, 2025).
