For Pool and Spa Operators

Pool and Spa Operators

As outlined in the Recreational Water Protocol (2008), public health inspectors are required to inspect public pools and spas in accordance with current regulations. They are also required to inspect wading pools and splash pads/spray pads using the most current guidance document.

The goal of this program and purpose of these inspections are to help prevent or reduce water-related illness, injuries and death associated with recreational water use.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is responsible for the inspection of the over 300 pools, spas and wading pools in our area. Public health inspectors provide information and guidance to the owners and operators of these facilities to assist them in providing the safest and healthiest recreational water environment. Inspections of these facilities occur at the following frequencies:

Public Pools: At least two times per year (seasonal) or once every three months (year round) to ensure compliance with Ontario Regulation 565/90

Public Spas: At least two times a year (seasonal) or once every three months (year round) to ensure compliance with Ontario Regulation 428/05

Public Wading Pools: At least two times per year (seasonal) or once every three months (year round) to assess consistency with the Public Wading Pools Protocol 1998

Spray pads/Splash Pads: At least two times per year (seasonal) or once every three months (year round) to monitor sanitation and safety using the most current guidance document

Inspectors will also investigate bather complaints and provide more frequent inspections as required.
