Perinatal Mental Health Help And Support

Pregnancy, postpartum and parenting bring many changes for individuals and families. Connecting with community services to support your mental health and your family’s adjustment during the perinatal period may be helpful.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has developed a list of community services for your information. It does not represent a complete listing of all available services. It is not intended as an endorsement of any individual or service. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit does not assume responsibility for services provided by other organizations or service providers. Please check with each agency to determine which services are currently being offered and how best to access their services.

Home visiting for pregnant women and families with children up to school entry. Provides information about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, strategies around coping, tips for nurturing yourself, ways for improving communication with loved ones, referrals to local counseling and information about community resources including groups for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

A free group for parents who are struggling with postpartum mood changes. This group will offer tools and strategies to help parents cope.

Chigamik’s Indigenous Perinatal Mental Health Program works with First Nation, Métis, and Inuit mothers in North Simcoe Muskoka who may be planning a pregnancy, are currently pregnant, have recently had a baby, or have experienced a loss during this time. The program works with clients and the medicine wheel as they travel along their journey into parenthood, providing the support and resources needed for good physical, emotional and spiritual health.

The Indigenous Perinatal Health Counsellor provides assessment, counselling, and health education to clients regarding their pre and post-natal care. The program is intended for individuals 16 years of age or older who are preconception, pregnant or within one year postpartum and at risk of developing psychiatric problems and/or have a history of mental illness and/or experiencing postpartum mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, or complicated perinatal related bereavement (up to one year after loss) or birth trauma. Services offered include clinical mental health assessments, counselling, psychotherapy, case management, and educational services to clients and families in the Central Region North in person and virtually. Referrals are accepted by phone 325-2201 ext.3122., fax 705-325-0450  or in person and can be made by anyone, including self-referrals. Located at  Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Community Mental Health Services.

A trained responder will listen without judgement, provide understanding, and support and review available resources.

An 8-week online support group run by the Reproductive Life Stages Program at Women’s College Hospital. It is for women and gender-diverse individuals who have a baby under the age of one year. It will take place on a confidential online discussion board, giving you the opportunity to share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, while learning from and supporting others going through similar life transition. Each week a new topic will be explored, relating to issues that commonly emerge during the first year of life with a new baby. Specialized groups for Black parents and young parents are available in addition to groups open to all.

Groups are 90 minutes (1.5 hours) in length. The first ~30 minutes is providing information, education, and establishing group guidelines. The next ~60 minutes is “talk time,” in which group members share and talk with each other. Group members must be present for the group guidelines before joining in the discussion or “talk time."
