Injury Prevention

Cyber seniors project

The Cyber Seniors program came to Simcoe Muskoka in 2017.  The Simcoe Muskoka Integrated Fall Strategy (SMIFS), the fall prevention community partnership at the time, applied for New Horizons Funding, to purchase iPads. They were purchased as loaners, for seniors who did not have access to an iPad, but wished to learn how to use one.

The goal of this program, is to increase family and social connectedness in seniors, and to reduce the risk of isolation.  The program introduces the senior to the basics of an iPad, then walks them through using email, texting, FaceTime or video calls, in an effort to make communication with family more accessible.  Facebook and YouTube will also be explored, as will any other interest of the senior.

The project partners with our school boards in the region and engage students in a teaching and mentorship role.  This intergenerational aspect benefits the seniors, as they tend to really enjoy interacting with young people and don’t often get this opportunity. It will also provide a rich learning experience for the students involved.
