The Pap test is a simple screening test that takes only a few minutes and can be done during a visit to your doctor or health care provider.
The Pap test looks at the cells of your cervix. It can show unhealthy changes in these cells. Unhealthy cells can sometimes lead to cancer.
The best times to have the Pap test are:
- when you do not have your menstrual period
- when you have not had sex for 1 day (24 hours) before the test
- when you have not put anything such as foams or medicine in your vagina for two days (48 hours)
Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) has a new program where they notify clients who have had a recent Pap test of their test results and remind them when it is time to return for screening. Further details on the program can be found at the CCO website. Ontario Cervical Screening Program
