Fall prevention

Falls are a significant public health issue, being the #1 reason for injury related emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths in Simcoe Muskoka.

Older adults are at risk of falling. The risk of having a fall increases with age and declining health. Fall related injury requiring hospitalizations increases  with age.  Broken bones, internal bleeding and concussions are common with fall injuries in older adults.  Please visit our aging and wellness pages for information on how optimizing your health can reduce your risks of chronic disease and injury.

  • A fall is often the incident that steals away someone’s independence.
  • Falling is the number one cause of injury-related deaths & hospitalizations for seniors in Canada.
  • Fractures and head injuries are common.
  • 40% of all nursing home admissions occur as a result of a fall.
  • Most falls happen in and around the home.

The good news is that most falls are predictable, and CAN be prevented.
