SIMCOE MUSKOKA - There’s praise this week from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit for the County of Simcoe, City of Barrie, City of Orillia and Midland. They’ve all proclaimed Friday, September 9 as FASD Awareness Day.

It’s a day set aside around the world on the ninth day of the ninth month to remind everyone about the importance of women staying alcohol free during the nine months of their pregnancy.

FASD, or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, affects one out of every 100 children born in Canada, leaving them with a range of disabilities that can be physical, mental, behavioural and even restrict their ability to learn.

The health unit is part of a local partnership stressing there’s no safe amount, no safe time and no safe kind of alcohol during pregnancy.

For local information and support regarding FASD, contact Health Connection 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.
