SIMCOE MUSKOKA – Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka as temperatures are expected to reach wind chills of -35oC in Simcoe County and -40oC in Muskoka this evening into Saturday.

While decreasing temperatures can put everyone at risk for cold-related illnesses, such as frostbite and hypothermia, health risks are greatest for homeless persons, outdoor workers, older adults, infants and children and persons with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or lung disease. To reduce your risk of cold-related illness, avoid exposure to the cold by covering exposed skin with a hat, gloves, scarf, and take regular breaks from the cold in warm locations whenever possible.

For more information about cold and its impact on your health, call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., connect with the health unit on Facebook and Twitter, or visit simcoemuskokahealth.org.
