BARRIE – The Global Breastfeeding Challenge 2015 takes place October 3, and all breastfeeding families are invited to join in at the East Bayfield Community Centre in Barrie! The Global Breastfeeding. Challenge is a fun and friendly competition in which families come together and attempt to set the record for the most children breastfeeding simultaneously.

Date:                Saturday Oct. 3, 2015

Time:               Latch on begins at 11 a.m. (Registration at 10 a.m.)

Location:          East Bayfield Community Centre

                        80 Livingstone St. E., Barrie

The purpose of this challenge is to bring awareness to breastfeeding, and demonstrate promotion, protection and support for breastfeeding women and their families.

Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman will be showing the community's support for breastfeeding with a proclamation of National Breastfeeding Week and a flag raising ceremony to kick off the week.  Proclamation and flag raising take place on September 30 at 3:00 p.m. at Barrie City Hall.

On October 1, at 7 p.m. a screening of the film “Milk” will take place at the Rowntree Theatre, Georgian College, 1 Georgian Drive, Building H, Rm. 106. Milk brings a universal perspective on the politics, commercialization and controversies surrounding birth and infant feeding.

Watch for life-sized photographic cutouts of local women breastfeeding their children at the latch on. The cutouts are part of a campaign by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reminding the public that women need support and encouragement to breastfeed anytime and anywhere, wherever their children need them. And look for the breastfeeding is welcome signs at local business, community and municipal organizations.
