National Addictions Awareness Week, Nov. 18–25

Nov 20, 2013
Even though many people drink alcohol at a safe level, others do not. Binge drinking – four or more drinks on one occasion for women and five or more drinks for men – is harmful to your health. In the short term, binge drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning and injury. Over time, alcohol use can lead to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Even though many people drink alcohol at a safe level, others do not. Binge drinking – four or more drinks on one occasion for women and five or more drinks for men – is harmful to your health. In the short term, binge drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning and injury. Over time, alcohol use can lead to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Highlighting the drinking patterns of our youth is important because their brains are still developing until the age of 25 and are very susceptible to the negative effects of drugs like alcohol.

Alcohol consumption behaviours among Simcoe Muskoka youth in Grades 9 through 12 are significantly higher than the province in the following areas: alcohol use, binge drinking, drunkenness and drinking and driving according to the Ontario Student Drug Use Survey.

  • Alcohol Use 73% vs. 66.7% in Ontario (highest in the province)
  • Binge Drinking 45.2% vs. 29.3% in Ontario (highest in the province)
  • Drunkenness 40.8% vs. 26% in Ontario (highest in the province)
  • Drinking and Driving 10.9% vs. 7% Ontario (highest in the province) for drivers Grade 10–12
