Petting Zoos

Petting zoos and animal exhibits are often popular attractions at special events across Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. Often the public health concerns associated with the transmission of infectious diseases such as E. coli, rabies, or other zoonotic diseases are overlooked. Understanding how to reduce the risk of infectious diseases spreading from animals to humans will help prevent visitors from getting sick.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care provides recommendations to petting zoo operators to inform them of what they should consider when operating a petting zoo in Ontario.

Do you work with amphibians, reptiles, or feeder rodents? It's important to consider the risks associated with handling these animals.
