Sun safety for your family – A Hat Is Where It’s At!

Wide-brimmed hats and bucket hats are ideal to provide shading from sunlight.  A brim that’s wide enough will shade the face, neck, ears and eyes from the sun.

A hat is just one way of protecting your family from the harmful rays of the sun. It’s estimated that one in seven children born today will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. As days get longer and you are outside more often, it is important to protect yourself and your family against the sun.

Limit outdoor activities ...to times before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m., when you and your family can be most protected from the sun's harmful rays.
Look for shaded areas to do outdoor activities ...Made in the Shade.
Wear loose fitting clothes to protect as much of your skin as possible—like a t-shirt over your bathing suit.
Put on sunglasses with 100 per cent UVA/UVB protection.
Use sunscreen ...SPF 15 or higher. Apply 30 minutes before going outside and every 2 hours and after skin becomes wet from water or perspiration. (Getting the most out of your Sun Screen).

Sunscreen is not recommended for infants under 6 months old. Babies under one year should be kept out of direct sunlight in a covered stroller, under an umbrella or gazebo tent or in the shade as much as possible.

See your doctor if you notice any growth, mole or discolouration appear suddenly or begin to change, or if a sore does not heal. Spot check external link
