Enjoy the summer heat — safely
Summer’s warmest days can take the starch out of all of us. But in extremely hot weather, your body may be unable to cool itself enough. This can lead to damage to internal organs and even the brain. Hot weather also increases the possibilities of air pollution, which can be harmful especially to people with lung conditions or asthma.
Global climate change means we can expect hotter days and more days when the air quality is poor. In 2005 the Ontario Medical Association estimated that air pollution is responsible for more than 200 premature deaths, 550 hospital admissions and 2,000 emergency room visits in Simcoe Muskoka a year.
