Flood Precautions
Preparing for the possibility of flooding
- Ensure you have a battery operated radio so you can listen continuously to eather reports for updated emergency information.
- Follow the instructions and advice of local authorities.
- Fill your bathtubs, sinks and plastic bottles with clean water in case flooding contaminates water sources.
- Bring outdoor furniture inside and secure any items that could be swept away or damaged by floodwaters.
- Move your furniture and valuables to higher floors in your home where they are less likely to be damaged.
- If you are asked by authorities, turn off all utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve.
- Prepare a survival kit in case of evacuation including the following:
-flashlight
-battery powered radio
-waterproof outer wear and footwear
-extra clothing
-essential medicines and toiletries
-personal documents and family identification
-extra batteries.
When a flood warning has been issued:
- Be alert to the signs of flooding. A warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
- If you live in a flood-prone area or believe that you are at risk, evacuate immediately and move to higher ground. Do not worry about personal belongings as they can be replaced - you cannot.
- Stay away from valleys and low-lying areas. They can quickly fill with water.
- If outdoors, move away from dangerous flood waters and climb to high ground and remain there.
- Continue to listen to a battery powered radio for further instructions and situation updates.
- If emergency officials indicate you need to evacuate your home do not ignore the warning. Take your survival kit with you and follow routes that are specified by officials. Do not take shortcuts. They could be washed out. Don't try to drive through flooded roads as swift water can sweep your car away.
