Walking for physical activity

Did you know more than half of the body’s muscles are designed for walking? Here are some reasons why walking is such a great physical activity:

  • It is a no/low cost activity;
  • It is a natural movement;
  • Walking can refresh the mind, reduce fatigue, relieve stress and tension, and increase energy;
  • Walking provides a time for sharing and spending time with friends and family;
  • Walking strengthens bones and helps to prevent or control osteoporosis (a condition where the bones become brittle and fragile).
  • Brisk walking trains your heart, lungs and muscles to work better.

Watch this short video to see what you can do to warm your muscles up before a walk and stretch after it. You can also download this 10,000 Steps for better health resource to track your walking (ideally used with a pedometer).
