When we think about what makes us healthy, what often comes up is access to health care, the lifestyle choices we make, and our genetics. Although these do impact our health, our health is determined by so much more. These include factors such as where we live and work, the amount of money we have and our social connections. These are known as the social determinants of health because they influence how healthy we are and how long we live.
Health starts long before we need health care. It starts with these social determinants, each of which has been shown to have strong impacts on our health.
