Turn it Off!

Did you know…

  • air pollution harms everyone’s health;
  • each day idling engines in Canada release nine million kilograms of greenhouse gases into our air;
  • your car only needs 30 seconds to warm up;
  • if every driver of a light duty vehicle avoided idling by five minutes a day, collectively we would save:
    -680 million litres of fuel
    -over 1.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions
    -$646 million annually in fuel costs (assuming fuel costs are $0.95/L).

With the support of an “Awaire” grant from Enbridge Inc., the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is working with partners, including local school boards, municipalities and community organizations, to raise awareness about idling and air quality.

All residents and drivers in Simcoe and Muskoka can take action to improve air quality by reducing vehicle idling in school zones and throughout the community.

You can start making a difference today by visiting Natural Resource of Canada’s “Idle Free Zone” website where you will learn more about idling and what you can do as an individual to help improve our air!
