Vitamin D

Protecting yourself from the sun may make your body produce less natural Vitamin D in your body. For this reason, you should focus on getting enough Vitamin D from the foods you eat and the beverages you drink. Every day you should:

  • Drink 2 cups of milk or fortified soy beverages. Fortified means that vitamin D has been added.
  • Eat two servings of fish every week. Choose fish such as char, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout.
  • If you are over the age of 50, take a daily supplement of 400 IU of vitamin D.

If you do not drink milk or soy beverages, or don’t eat foods that are rich in Vitamin D such as fish, you should consult your health care provider to discuss your individual Vitamin D needs.
