Shade makes a difference!

  • Make tree planting a community event. Talk to your local councillor about what the municipality or city can do to make the parks more sun safe and to provide more shaded areas in new subdivision parks and green spaces.
  • Get together with your neighbours to plant trees.
  • Look into buying in bulk to get a better price. The local nursery might even sponsor the project by giving you a few trees at no charge for an area in your neighbourhood.
  • Talk to local service clubs about contributing to a tree-planting drive. This might be a project that your local scout troop could adopt.
  • Get your community group to invest in portable shade structures such as tents or canopies for your local daycares, church groups, sports teams or other community events. Ask local businesses and service clubs to sponsor their purchase. Present it as an advertising opportunity for them to showcase their good will and support for a healthy community.
  • Link with local organizations that promote cancer prevention.
