Winter Sports Safety

Winter offers many wonderful opportunities for outdoor play in the snow and on the ice. Participating in winter sports is a great way for families and children over 1 year of age to have fun together and be active. This includes ice skating, ice hockey, skiing, sledding, tobogganing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling.

Children under 1 year of age should not be engaging in winter sports.

  • Infants under one year of age have large heads and weak necks. Sudden turns and stops put too much stress on their bodies to stay upright with their head steady.
  • The weight of a helmet adds additional stress on the neck.
