Injury Prevention—Older Adults

Staying Independent Falls Prevention Coalition (SIFPC)

What We Do

"Staying Independent" is a community partnership dedicated to preventing falls in older adults living in Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka.

Staying Independent aims to reduce the number of fall-related injuries in older adults within Simcoe Muskoka by raising awareness of the impact falls have on the lives of older adults and their families, and providing opportunities for falls prevention education to the public and health care professionals.

Initiatives our coalition has completed:

  • Hosted annual educational event for health care providers in October 2008 and 2009.
  • Created an electronic inventory of falls prevention programs, services and resources for older adults and health care providers within Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka - launched October 14, 2009 www.fallspreventioninfo.ca.
  • Increased access to in-home and community activity programs through the SMART Program. Services provided by VON Simcoe County Branch, and funded by aging at home strategy, North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN.

Initiatives our coalition is interested in pursuing:

  • Continue hosting annual educational event for health care providers.
  • Medication Clean Out Campaign
  • Home assessment and modification programs for those with limited income.
  • Advocating for policy change to the Ontario building code around grab bars and stairs.
