Secondary School Program

Students are required by the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) to have up to date immunization records. Each year the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reviews records of student registered in Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. Once school immunization records are reviewed, a request for immunization information is mailed to the home.

Students who do not have complete records or appropriate documentation on file at the health unit will receive a request for immunization information in the mail sometime through the school year. Not responding to the request may risk suspension from school until the updated information is provided to the health unit.

What else do I need to know about secondary school immunization?

  • Students in Ontario are required to be immunized against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella.
  • Immunization clinics will not be held in secondary schools.
  • The required immunizations can be given by your health care provider or by making an appointment at a local health unit office.
  • Keeping an up to date immunization record is important for this age group as they prepare to enter college, university or the work force.

What happens if my child receives an immunization suspension notice?

  • The health unit requires an up to date immunization record prior to suspension day which is indicated on the notice, click here to find out how to provide this information.
  • "Walk in" immunization clinics will be held for secondary school students at all local health unit offices prior to suspension day - no appointment required.
  • If your child receives immunization at a health care provider you must call the health unit to provide the type of immunization and the date received.
