Elementary School Program
Students are required by the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) to have up to date immunization records. Each year the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reviews records of students registered in Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. Once school immunization records are reviewed, a request for immunization information is mailed to the home.
Students, who do not have a complete immunization record or appropriate documentation if they are not immunized, on file at the health unit, will receive a request for immunization information in the mail sometime throughout the school year. Not responding to the request may risk suspension from school until the updated information is provided to the health unit.
What else do I need to know about school immunization?
- Students in Ontario are required to be immunized against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella
- The required immunizations can be given by your health care provider or by making an appointment at a health unit immunization clinic
- If your child receives immunization at a health care provider you must contact the health unit to update your child’s immunization record . Health care providers do not contact the health unit when they provide immunization to students.

Grade 7 Immunization Program - Voluntary
Vaccines for Hepatitis B and Meningococcal conjugate ACWY are offered to students in Grade 7. This voluntary immunization program started in 1994 for Hepatitis B and 2009 for Men-C-ACWY.
Grade 7 students will now be able to receive the Men-C-ACWY vaccine, rather than the Men-C vaccine that has been used for Grade 7 students since 2005. This vaccine will now provide grade 7 students with protection against three more serotypes of meningococcal disease; A, W, & Y. The change will meet the new recommendation for a booster dose of meningococcal vaccine for adolescents.
In September, a consent form and fact sheet for both the Hepatitis B and Men-C-ACWY vaccines will be sent home with students. The consent form must be signed by the parent/guardian indicating that they are aware the vaccine is going to be offered to the student. The student must also sign the consent form indicating whether or not they consent to the vaccine(s) and must return the consent form to the school prior to clinic day.
Please encourage your son/daughter to eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the clinic and wear a short sleeved shirt.
