Caring For Yourself

Taking care of yourself will help you to get off to a good start and cope with the challenges and demands of early parenting.

 

Taking Care of Yourself Means ….

 

Getting Enough Rest

  • Sleep when your baby sleeps
  • Find ways to relax and rest your body and mind, even if you can’t sleep
  • Go to bed a little earlier than usual

 

Eating a Balanced Diet and Getting Some Exercise

  • Find simple and healthy meals to enjoy
  • Bring along a healthy snack when you are on the run
  • Prepare meals in advance when others are home to help you
  • Here is some information about exercising and breastfeeding 

Making Time for Yourself

  • Say yes to help from family and friends
  • Limit the amount of housework you expect to get done
  • Plan a simple activity or outing you will enjoy

 

Recognizing Your Feelings

  • Be aware of how your feelings affect your reactions
  • Respect your own needs – do not be afraid of saying ‘no’ to others
  • Share tasks and responsibilities with other family members

 

Finding Support in your Community

  • Visit Ontario Early Years Centres, libraries and community recreation centres
  • Find support groups for parents in your area
  • Look for neighbours with babies to get together with
