Newly Elected Municipal Councils: Let's Make Public Health a Priority

Municipal politicians have an important role to play in supporting improved health in Simcoe Muskoka.

There are many public health issues that fall within the authority of elected municipal officials. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has highlighted several key health issues that require government action.

Block of text: Let's Make Health A PriorityThese topics, along with suggested actions the government can take, are outlined in a fact sheet "Let's Make Health A Priority" that has been made available to municipalities in Simcoe and Muskoka.

Municipal councils make many important decisions that affect our health over the long term. These include, for example: creating and revising planning policies that give us access to nutritious foods and opportunities to be physically active; using municipal policy to control access to alcoholic beverages; implementing community water fluoridation; and supporting services for children, youth and families. Raising health as an issue during the election campaign will help to profile it as a priority in municipal planning and decision making.
