Infant Feeding Survey

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the health unit doing the Infant Feeding Survey?

The health unit conducts an infant feeding survey every year; this is our fifth year conducting the survey. We use this information to understand how families feed their babies and to help us to plan our programs and services.

Collecting this information is one requirement of maintaining our Baby-Friendly Initiative designation. The Baby-Friendly Initiative provides guidelines for hospital and community organizations so that they can support families to meet their infant feeding goals and help babies get off to a healthy start.

When are calls being made?

Calls are being made from July 9th to August 17th, 2018.

Why am I being contacted?

When your child was born, the hospital staff or midwife asked for your consent to complete and share your information with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.  For 2018 we have selected a random sample of families from Simcoe Muskoka who have babies between the ages of five and a half to 12 months.

Do have I to participate?

When you are called you will be asked for your consent to participate in the survey. Participation is voluntary and your decision to answer the survey questions, will not affect the care and/or services you receive from the health unit.

Are my responses anonymous?

Yes. Your survey responses are entered into an electronic survey provider. Names, phone numbers and contact information are not being collected in the survey and we cannot link individual responses to people’s names or any contact information. Information used to contact respondents (name and phone number) is stored within a secured password-protected electronic file. Your information can only be accessed by those staff who are organizing and making phone calls. This information will be deleted after the survey has been completed.

How does the health unit ensure the survey is conducted ethically?

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit completes an internal review using a team of people not connected to the design and development of the survey. The review ensures that the questions and process are consistent with Provincial Legislation.

This review is based on the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2), which outlines the ethical considerations for data collection such as confidentiality, honesty, objectivity, social responsibility and human subject’s protection, among others.

Questions regarding the collection, use and disclosure of personal information should be directed to the Office of the Privacy Officer, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, 15 Sperling Drive, Barrie ON L4M 6K9, (705) 721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.

Who is the information being shared with?

We will share general findings with local community partners including hospitals, family health teams, and community health centres so that we can work together to improve programs and services that are offered to families. We do not report individual responses.
