Managing Stress

What is stress?

Stress is a part of everyday life. Staying organized, managing time, juggling school, friends, home, and work can be challenging. Stress comes from all kinds of places. It can sometimes be a good thing.  It helps you to be alert, energized, it can motivate you, and even thrill you (think roller coaster rides!) But what about when you get that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach? Stress can quickly become negative if it leaves you feeling worried, anxious, scared or angry. Too much stress can interfere with our ability to do normal tasks, get along with others, and over time, can cause health problems.

Everyone handles things differently and that’s okay.  What causes you to be stressed out will be different from someone else. Recognizing the symptoms helps. Lots of teens describe it as heart pounding, sweaty palms, nervous, and feeling sick to your stomach. Start to recognize your symptoms, and you will be better able to cope.  One strategy is to relax and slow your breathing.  Next time you are feeling stressed, try some of these strategies:

  • Do something! If the stress is caused by a problem that has a solution, the best way to cope with that problem is to solve it
  • 4 square breathing technique
  • Exercise
  • Sleep
  • Daily relaxation time
  • Eat healthy.
