Asthma

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic medical condition that causes inflammation in the airways of the lungs and can lead to difficulty breathing. Proper education and management is important to reduce asthma symptoms and prevent death.

Legislation: Ryan’s Law

Under Ryan’s Law, 2015 all School Boards in Ontario are required to have policies or procedures to address asthma in schools. Please refer to your School Board policy.

Does SMDHU Provide Asthma Training?

No. The health unit does not offer comprehensive training related to asthma or other prevalent medical conditions.

Training Resources

Schools are encouraged to review their School Board policies and procedures pertaining to the prevention and management of asthma and other prevalent medical conditions, including training requirements. Your School Board may already have a training agreement in place with local first aid training agencies or other community healthcare providers.
